Perishable Resources

Smart Joint Venture Brokers understand how lucrative it is to leverage perishable resources. An airplane seat that isn’t sold is wasted. An empty hotel room costs maybe $20. The average visitor to Las Vegas loses $500, so guess what? There are seldom empty hotel rooms! It pays the hotel to give them away! If the back end is properly constructed, it pays you to lose money or break even  on the front end. Employees that are not fully productive is a perishable resource, because time is passing. What does it cost to put an extra person into a seminar? Very little. Think about it.

When you’re dealing with intelligent entrepreneurs who understand that they’re in business to make a profit and not sales, it’s a lot easier to Joint Venture with them, so I suggest you work with Members of the DollarMakers Club to save time, money, and frustration. $10 is better than nothing. And if that ten dollars can lead to sales of $200, even better! Here’s what you want to look for: Anything that is wasted if it is not used. That’s a perishable resource. Seats at a concert that are not sold. Booths at a trade show. Underutilized resources. Income from correctly constructed Joint Ventures is 100% margin.

The approach to use is common sense to real business owners. Note: Only approach people on whom you have done due diligence. Don’t go cold calling. Get referred or work with known people. “If I can show you a way to drive more profit to your bottom line, using existing resources, with no cost, risk, or extra time, and I make it all happen, will you share some of that found money with me?” If they agree, put a written agreement in place before you do anything else.

On the day the trade show starts, there are unsold booths. Offer the salesperson a tenth of the price and you might well get them. If someone has a hotel that is not fully booked, show them how to add back end incomes by  selling tours, T shirts, shows, limos, all the things the concierge does - he’s an experienced JV broker and usually understands business and money better than the hotel’s General Manager. Really - I was a hotel manager and attended three years of hotel school, and I couldn’t believe how much money the average hotel manager leaves on the table. But then a manager is not an entrepreneur, is he?

Teach restaurants that additional guests earn them 68% if their food cost is 32%. Show them how to build a lucrative database and add JV’s, and share the profit with them. Get paid 20% on additional guests (usually in groups, like Rotary Club meetings or singles club meetings) by the restaurant, and then add back ends, like selling advertising space in the backs of the menus and giving Gift Certificates from other businesses to the restaurant guests, and you get paid a commission on all the resulting sales.

Most businesses don’t create or maintain databases of their clients, seldom communicate with them, and lose all the potential business. A name in a well utilized and leveraged database is worth a complimentary meal, seat, show, seminar, or haircut, especially if there’s no cost involved, wouldn’t you agree? You are surrounded by a multitude of opportunities to leverage perishable resources and make an unlimited amount of money.

ASK!

I got an e mail from a new DollarMakers Member a few months ago. He said, “Tell me what to do, Robin - I’m ready and hungry. I need to earn and extra $3,000 per month within two months.”  I called him and told him exactly what to do, and to be honest with you, when I put the phone down, I didn’t expect to hear back from him, because that is usually what happens. I was surprised when he e mailed me consistently, every two days, asking questions and implementing the action steps, until he was earning $3,800 per month. It took him 9 weeks. He insisted on success and he followed instructions. Cream doesn’t have to be begged, bribe, or coerced to rise to the top. People who succeed make themselves noticed. They demand success. The ask, act and outwork everyone else.

Push yourself to the front. Climb the ladder while everyone else is still sleeping. ASK, and you will receive. Knock, and it will be opened. Seek, and you will find. Take the initiative. Ask successful businesspeople, “What do I need to deliver to you to get you to send me a check for a thousand dollars a month? What marketing and sales materials do you have that I can use? What training can you offer me? I’m ready to make this happen! In your experience, what do you suggest I do?” Communicate daily. Get to work before anyone else and leave after they do. When they make six calls, you make sixty calls.

Winners don’t have to be reminded to show up. They do it automatically. ASK: “What is it that you want more than anything else? If I can help you get that, what will you give me?” Then use the Joint Venture information you have to access the resources and results they want, and share the reward. Be proactive, positive, and productive, and you will be powerful.  Enthusiastic, goal-directed action gets results. When you sow, you reap. 

Jim Rohn has a wonderful way of explaining the parable of the sower. He says the sower was ambitious - he had big goals. and he sowed excellent seed - good quality. The first part landed by the wayside and the birds ate it. The birds represent the people who will distract the people you’re working with. You invite them to a meeting, they get all excited, but they don’t show up. They talked with a drunken cousin who persuaded them they were getting ripped off, so they didn’t come to the meeting. The birds got them. Don’t chase the birds, Mr. Rohn exhorts us, because then you’ll leave the field. Keep on sowing. In this case, keep on ASKING. Don’t get discouraged or angry - it’s simply the law of averages. It’s the way things work. Human nature. Keep asking.

Some of the seeds fell on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. They started to grow, but the first hot day they withered and died. People start working with you but they’re weak, so they quit at the first sign of difficulty and blame everyone else. No problem, you keep on sowing - asking.

Some seeds fell on thorny ground, and the thorns got them. The thorns are the little cares and distractions. “I couldn’t come to the meeting because it rained / my kid was sick / my wife wouldn’t let me / the dog got drunk.” Little things cheat them out of big opportunities. It’s just the way it is, Mr. Rohn teaches us - keep on asking and sowing!

Finally, some seeds fall on good ground. They always will, as long as you keep on sowing. Winners understand this, that’s why they keep on sowing. They never quit. Mr. Rohn tells us that some of these seeds that landed on the good ground brought forth 30%, some did 60%, and some had the capacity to produce 100%. Not all will do 100%, so let the 30’s do 30, the 60’s do 60, and the 100’s do 100%. The duds will lead to the studs. Keep on. Keep on asking.

Put your hand up. ASK. Ask until you get what you want. Make yourself known. Force your way to success. There is very little competition out there for winners. There are only three possible reponses when you ask: Yes, No, or a counter offer. That’s two out of three. Paul J. Meyer said, “What’s behind this door I cannot tell, but this I know, and know it well; the more I open, the more I sell!” ASK. Ask the right people the right questions and your victory is assured, my friend.

“What? Me Change my Mind?”

If you were to put a wooden board, five inches wide and eight feet long, on the ground, could you walk along the board without falling off it? Of course you could. Piece of cake. If that same board was suspended between two building, twenty-two stories above the ground, how would you feel about walking  along it? There’s no difference in your ability, only in your mind.

Psychologist Nicholas Humphrey tells of the case of Haitian Voodoo believers who actually die, apparently from some psychosomatic effect or terror, within mere days of having a malign “spell” cast upon them. Coming from Africa, I know first-hand the power of mysticism and witchcraft, and it’s present incarnation into modern life, cults, sects, and religion.

I am often amused at those who tell me they’re making a fortune in dealing foreign exchange on their home computers, and they they can show me how to do the same, as long as I sign up for the same program they did, which costs many thousands of dollars. Naturally, they would stand to make a healthy commission if I was desperate and naive enough to take their advice. The truth is that when pressed for more information, they might admit that they are making a fortune IN THEORY, since they are using the simulator program (for which they pay an exorbitant monthly fee) - it’s still a game. The wooden board is on the ground. They haven’t actually invested any real money in Forex. As you might anticipate, using real money will alter things in their minds (the board will be raised twenty-two stories) and they will not make money. And that’s kindly without assuming the simulator is not “fixed” to encourage these marks and stimulate them to invite their friends to join the scam.

Stepping out of the classroom filled with cheering enthusiasts into the real business world can make a difference. Even when the board is on the ground, we convince ourselves that it’s very high up and risky. It’s all in your head. We know that our circumstances will change only when WE change, and that change is beyond intellectually accepting some business or psychological principles. Change is a door that can only be opened from the inside.

The Buddha said, “Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you, as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox. Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a pure mind, happiness will follow you, as a shadow clings to a form.”

The burning question is, of course, “How do we change?” What method can we use that will sufficiently shift our internal interpretations of , and beliefs about opportunity, money, value, entitlement, and supply and demand, to make it possible to apply what we learn in the real world? How can we learn to walk confidently along the board?

Your Bamboo Story

One day a man planted a bamboo seedling. He cared deeply for it, so each day he watered it and tended to it, always making sure it had the proper sunlight to grow. After a year’s time, the man saw that the plant had not grown at all, but he continued to water it, tend to it, and make sure it was nourished by proper sunlight. Again, after the second year the plant had not grown. He watered and tended it through the third year and the fourth. Suddenly, as if by magic, in the fifth it began growing. In fact, it grew two and a half feet a day until in six weeks it was ninety feet tall.

The things you start in your life - relationships, businesses, new endeavors, new projects, are all bamboo plants. This illustration is very closely mirrored in Network Marketing, except that if you’re in the right one, you can start making money fast, and when you hit critical mass you can’t believe the growth. Those who make twenty or a hundred thousand dollars a month are not smarter than anyone else - they just kept on when all the others left.

Calvin Coolidge said, “Press on: nothing in the world can take the place of perseverance. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; un-rewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.”

“Active or Passive?”

I wrote to my family in South Africa this Christmas morning. In my letter, I was interested to observe the way I put a certain sentence together. Here it is: “I love my new study - all wood, designed exactly the way I wanted it - it’s a dream made true.” Note - a dream doesn’t passively, randomly COME true - it is MADE true.

Like “falling pregnant” that’s like suddenly falling into a deep, dark hole in a leafy jungle. No - she made herself pregnant by choosing to sleep with someone. In our weak, passive-aggressive society, where we’re all politically correct and afraid to tell it the way it is, people are no longer fat or obese - they’re LARGE. Because they chose to pig out at the trough too much. I have a fat stomach because I eat too much junk and don’t get enough exercise. It’s not water retention or my mommy’s fault. Drug addiction and alcoholism is now a “disease”, like they were wandering around in a swamp somewhere and unexpectedly got bitten by the Alcohol Mosquito - not their fault! (Although they probably knew there were a few of those mosquitoes lurking in that swamp when they decided to visit…) No. They knew the dangers, understood the consequences, and choose, in spite of the warnings, to take drugs, drink, or smoke. They deserve the consequences. Pity my tax dollars have to go to paying for their choices, but welcome to creeping socialism.

OK, I know there are exceptions, like small children introduced to drugs by bad parents, but that’s not the context here. I’m talking about choice, not chance. I don’t like my tax money being used for lazy bums who choose not to work. I refuse to give people fish, when they are quite capable of fishing. That’s called a parasite. We sow and we reap. Winners take responsibility for the circumstances in their lives, because they know that CIRCUMSTANCES ARE CONSEQUENCES.  Hoping for things to happen doesn’t work. Attending seminars is a waste of time unless you apply the information through disciplined, consistent action. You don’t get successful by osmosis.

Now for the good news. With this revelation that mysticism, witchcraft, and chance (note that successful people do not buy lottery tickets or gamble) don’t work, and seeing that your passive hopes didn’t result in the kind of results you wanted, I have a special offer for you for 2008: If you’re prepared to take consistent, disciplined action, rigorously follow a proven system, and remain committed for one year, (90% of my readers have already left), your life will be completely different in one year - you will have retired with more residual income than you need to live on. Is Cognitive Dissonance Stealing Your Success?

Why, when offered proven systems that will dramatically reduce their risk and overhead, while at the same time boosting their profits exponentially, do many entrepreneurs reject the offer outright? Why would someone who is offered a guaranteed method to achieve financial retirement in one year, when they have categorically stated that they want it more than anything else, refuse to entertain the offer?

Cognitive Dissonance is psychological discomfort caused by inconsistencies between a person’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or actions. We all naturally avoid discomfort, so we seek out and select information and input that mirrors and supports our dominant beliefs. Someone who believes that you have to work hard for many years in order to retire, and who has been conditioned to accept this, finds it hard to understand the freedom available through Joint Ventures.

Aronson’s Principle of Effort tells us that the more effort we have invested in a behavior, the more dissonance. Someone who has studied for many years to get a job and invested years in that job or business, finds it hard to admit that they can make ten times more money without the need of any formal education. The rut is hard to climb out of.

“I’ve spent five years in financial planning and I cannot accept that it was all a waste.” “I have spent thousands to learn from my cult - how can I accept that it was a waste of money and five years of my life?” Their role contamination has kicked in. “Don’t take my crutch away! Don’t steal my security blanket!”

We will do more to avoid pain than to gain a benefit. We justify our mistakes in order to avoid embarrassment. Emotions and conditioning are not rational. The ego is seldom flexible. The words that escape the mouths of those suffering from Cognitive Dissonance are frequently, “It’s too good to be true - it’s a scam - it’s heresy…” So we break the mirror, shoot the messenger, and willingly, even eagerly, return to slavery, suffering, and a life of quiet desperation, frustration, and passive aggression.  This explains a violent attack on a pregnant, anti-abortion demonstrator. It tells us why people reject lucrative, life-changing offers, and remain in mind-numbing mystical cults or abusive relationships.

Cognitive Dissonance prevents women from escaping abusive husbands, parents from chastising their hooligan children, and employees from firing their demanding bosses. It keeps people locked into torturous mental and emotional prisons. Yet is it not necessary. Confront your fear, and you will overcome it. Create a support group of successful, open-minded, free people, and escape your comfort zone one step at a time.

Fuel for 2008

What would happen if you used these powerful affirmations every day, throughout 2008? What kind of success do you think you might achieve if these were the words you started and ended your day with, and repeated out loud, with belief, confidence, and enthusiasm,  while walking, shaving, washing the dishes, showering, and skiing?

“I am strong, confident, and bulletproof.”

I am happy, healthy, and successful.”

I am unstoppable, I am excited, I am a heat-seeking missile.”

“Every day, in every way, I am getting stronger and stronger, richer and richer, happier and happier.”

“I am doggedly determined, focused, and enthusiastic.”

“I achieve a minimum yearly cumulative residual income from …. sources of $…. by November 30th, 2008.”

“I take personal responsibility for my success, freedom, and happiness.”

Take massive, focused, consistent action and mix with others who use the same kind of affirmations every day, and your 2008 will be wonderful.

Set Your Happiness Free!

Stephen Covey correctly stated that when we live according to our values and principles, we will be happy. In order to happier and more fulfilled, therefore, we need to remove anything that prevents us from creating a lifestyle that is congruent with our personal philosophies and ideologies. “There are people in the world who need to believe that perfection is not possible, in order to justify their compromise and mediocrity”,  James Valiant tells us in his interview with Prodos. But I believe it is possible to live in full congruence.

Naturally, the people in your life need to be in harmony with your aspirations and values. The Buddha taught us, “If the traveler cannot find master or friend to go with him, let him travel on alone rather than with a fool for company.” And your work, hobbies, and lifestyle needs to be carefully created, using your philosophy as the blueprint.  In order to build a fine new building, you first have to clear the land. “So cut through the strap and the thong and the rope. Loosen the fastenings…” - remove people, obligations, commitments, partnerships, input, and associations that will undermine and sabotage your ideal life.

We need to emulate Ayn Rand’s Howard Roark character, a man who doesn’t care what the world thinks about him and insists on being true to what he believes in. It is possible to live congruently. Yes, you have to continually remove the weeds, plant and nurture the right seeds, work hard and courageously to consistently create and perfect, but it is quite an attainable objective and very satisfying indeed. Break free from the cage that limits, dwarfs, and frustrates your true purpose. To grow, you need an environment, people, and circumstances that will nourish, bolster, and support you on your mission.

When you live a congruent life, you will be happier, more attractive to successful people, enjoy higher self-esteem and confidence, and consequently achieve more than you ever thought possible. Look at your life, your home, your car, you work, your friends and associates, the place where you live, and decide if it what you really want, and if it all makes you happy. Be objective, avoid excuses and justifications, and don’t be swayed by the parasites, losers, and leeches in your life. Decide to set your happiness free. Become the butterfly you were meant to be.

Here are my values, and I will not let any choice, commitment, situation, or person get in the way of their blossoming in my life: Freedom, responsibility, creativity, accountability, contribution, power, production, and personal growth. How about you?

Your Philosophy

Your philosophy of life is the way you understand how things work, the beliefs you have about life and yourself, your values and purpose. Your philosophy drives and guides the way you interpret your circumstances and opportunities, and therefore the choices you make and the results you accomplish. What you create in your life is a direct result of your philosophy.

The root cause of your successes and failures, happiness and unhappiness, frustration and fulfillment, is your philosophy. It determines what you believe, and human beings constantly seek evidence to prove their dominating beliefs / philosophy. With this understanding, in order to improve your life, you have to improve or change your philosophy first.

Here’s a simple example. Two people attended one of my Joint Venture Broker Bootcamps. One person retired within seven months, using the information he got at the Bootcamp. Another has attended at least twenty Bootcamps, and never achieved anything. Why? The seeds from the Bootcamp landed in the fertile ground (mind) of the first person’s philosophy and grew like crazy, blossomed and brought forth fruit. The same seeds landed on the rocky ground of the second person’s philosophy and died every time. Same seeds, different philosophies. A socialist seldom succeeds in a capitalist business.

That’s why someone with a good philosophy will turn a bad situation, a rocky relationship, or a failing business, into a success, whereas someone with a dis-empowering philosophy will turn a great opportunity, a successful business, or a grand relationship into failure. It’s all about your philosophy. Ayn Rand said, “Chance, the witchdoctors teach, absolves responsibility”. I quote her, therefore it is reasonable to correctly assume that I follow her philosophy.

People who have the philosophy that they are controlled by their circumstances or other forces beyond their control will make very different choices from people who believe they create their own world. They will accept and reject different information and opportunities. So you have to ask yourself this very important question: “Looking at my life, what I have accomplished so far, and the way I see the future and my options, is my philosophy helping me or hurting me?” Do you want to keep your philosophy or trade it in for a new one?

Life offers us a smorgasbord, a buffet, of philosophies to choose from. Are you happy with the one you picked? Your religion is your philosophy. Is it working for you? Are you happy, optimistic, and excited about the future? When I was younger, I could drink lots of coffee. That was a good philosophy for then. Now I drink more tea - representing a new philosophy. If the sausage is giving you heartburn, Hilda, isn’t it time to change what you eat?

A TV interviewer interviewed two brothers. One was highly successful in every area of his life - a happy family, financial success, well liked, contributed to his community, happy. They other was a drug addict, bum, in and out of prison, bad relationships, bitter. The interviewer asked the loser, “Why are you so unsuccessful?” He answered,”My dad beat us and was always out of work and drunk, and my mother was a prostitute who smoked weed. That’s why I am a failure.” The interviewer then asked the other brother what he attributed his success to. He answered, ,”My dad beat us and was always out of work and drunk, and my mother was a prostitute who smoked weed. That’s why I am a success.” Same opportunities, different philosophies.

It’s never too late to change your philosophy. In the news today, I learned that Tony Blair has just become a Roman Catholic. He has changed his philosophy. You don’t need permission to change. You can have anything you like from life’s bountiful buffet of beliefs. Some will hurt you and some will help you. Some will restrict and imprison you, others will free you and enrich you. It’s your choice.

It’s not about what happens to you or the seminars you attend or the opportunities or challenges in your life’ it’s all about your philosophy. If you want your life to change, you have to change your philosophy. Find someone whom you trust and love, admire and respect, and whose success you wish you emulate, and follow their philosophy. Read their books, befriend their friends, model their lives, and learn, love, and live their philosophy. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. 2008 is an invitation to unprecedented success for you. With the right philosophy, you can achieve anything.

I Never Lived in my Car

I never lived in my car or washed in public bathrooms. I was never homeless. I fortunately don’t have a story like that. I also don’t have one single success story that was never repeated but used to sell multiple seminars.

My life is about growing up poor, living in 18 different places by the age of seventeen, and consistently improving my life, with no outside help, and despite the usual obstacles / opportunities of life, like a divorce that cleaned me out at 32, near bankruptcy at 39, or immigration at 45. Knocked down, bounced back, did things better. Made mistakes, failed, bounced back. Retired twice. Constant and never-ending improvement in three different countries.

What has been the secret to my relative success? Self-improvement programs and a dogged determination to succeed. Jim Rohn said, “A formal education will make you a living, but self-education will make you a fortune.” When you want something badly enough, nothing and nobody can stop you. Detours are simply temporary interruptions. I don’t take them seriously. My dreams and purpose are much bigger than any challenges along the way.

Here’s the thing: You are responsible for your success or failure. You have to become before you can do, and you must do before you can have. And along the way, it’s all about the people in your life. Some people will come into your life and for a while and they will help you succeed, but in time they will reveal that they are not what they seemed to to be. At that point, they must be removed. They were stepping stones. A few will come into your life and they will stay with you, because they’re real, and they have the same aspirations, values, beliefs, and goals that you do. They are your partners in success.

Those are the three, simple steps to success:

1. Have a powerful, exciting, measurable, personal, values-driven purpose. Your goals must be bigger than any problem or distraction that you could ever face. Your WHY will make the HOW easy. But you have to take consistent, daily ACTION. Read your goals every day and take action every day. Jim Rohn said “Your level of success in life in determined by your level of skill multiplied by the amount of action you take.” Massive action will increase your skill level and bring you massive results.

2. Constant self-improvement means reading, listening to, learning from, and associating with the right philosophy of success. 3. Associating with, learning from, and partnering with the right people. This is very important. Your netWORTH is determined by your netWORK. The people with whom you work and and play with will determine your level of success. People who join the DollarMakers Club understand this. Spend time with winners ONLY. When you find out that the person you thought was an eagle is really a duck wearing an eagle mask, end that relationship fast. If your friend feeds you poison, it’s still poison. Set the bar high for yourself and the other people in your life. When you find someone who is very successful in a certain area, model him or her, take their advice, follow their system, and life will be easier. Allow your mentor to lead you. I have a mentor in a certain business I’m involved in, and I follow the system religiously. It works. When you join me in this particular business, my metor also becomes your mentor.

Three simple steps. Easy to do, easy not to do. In view of the above, it makes sense to develop your own Core Group / Mastermind / Team. And each of them should have their own team. Listen for Clues

Listen to the words of a winner: “Now you see me, now you don’t. George thinks he will, but I know he won’t” - that’s Muhammad Ali talking. He never said, “I hope I win”, or “I’ll do my best”, or “I’ll TRY”. He said, “If you even dream of beating me, you’d better wake up and apologize.”

When you hear any of the following words, you are listening to a loser:

 ”It’s not my fault.”

” I don’t have enough time.”

“I will TRY.” (This is an upfront excuse.)

“I’ll do my best.”

“I hope so.”

“Hopefully / can’t / maybe.”

“I’ll think about it / I’ll get back to you.”

“I’m too old, too young, too inexperienced.”

People who say these things don’t believe they have power over their circumstances. They are not at cause; they are at effect. They are admitting that they are weak, scared, and lazy. The make excuses and they’re setting you up because they expect to let you and themselves down. They want forgiveness in advance for once again missing their deadlines and missing the mark. They’re MIA. They’re future deserters. Deserters should be shot, not befriended. You don’t hire a drunk to manage your liquor store. And when you find out he’s a drunk, you FIRE him.

Successful people take 100% responsibility and they make commitments. They will do whatever it takes to deliver. They dream big and they make no excuses for their dreams and goals.

Theodore Roosevelt told us, “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.” Winners are reliable, predictable, confident. Muhammad Ali said, “A rooster crows only when it sees the light. Put him in the dark and he’ll never crow. I have seen the light and I’m crowing.” That is solid gold confidence. Those are the words of a winner.

I had someone tell me that I shouldn’t say “I’m excited” as often as I do; he found it irritating. Today, he still has no money and he never will have any. His favorite saying was, “Drop your price, but don’t lose the sale.” Go figure. Open your ears and you’ll be able to avoid a lot of losers and lock in on some true winners. 

Muhammad Ali said, “The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.” Winners join Success University and feed their minds and prepare for battle, so victory is a slam dunk.

“I Challenge Me”

Over the past few years, I have felt I was going deaf. My father has hearing aids and I dreaded the thought of having to wear one - very restrictive. While I was sitting in a freezing chair lift, riding up to Mystery Peak to ski down the beautiful powder snow this week, I decided to confront my fear, and today I went for a hearing test. I was amazed when I found out that my hearing is absolutely fine. The specialist said, “Sometimes, when we’re busy, stressed, tired, or distracted, we don’t hear things”. It’s all in my head. I fully expect to hear better now that I don’t believe I’m going deaf. Sometimes we don’t want to hear certain things. 

The stories we tell ourselves about what we can or cannot do, who we are, and how things work, determines our destinies. Overcoming fear and breaking out of your comfort zone can become easy when you develop your mental muscles. Your thoughts and beliefs, expectations and fears control your life. Here are a few simple exercises to set you free to make 2008 a spectacular year.

Confront your dominant beliefs, especially limiting beliefs. If you’re a Democrat, tune in to Rush Limbaugh or watch Fox TV. And if you’re a Conservative, attend a liberal meeting or watch CNN. If you’re religious, read Richard Hawkins’ “The God Delusion” or “Letter to a Christian Nation” by Sam Harris. Both authors are Atheists. If you hate a certain ethnic group, attend one of their celebrations or events. If your friends are all broke, make friends with a millionaire or two.

We achieve what we believe and expect. We attract that which we spend the most time thinking about. Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and we reap what we sow. Challenge yourself to dream big and set outrageous goals, then go about making them believable. For example, earning $30,000 per month might seem a lot to you, but when you spend a lot of time with people who make that every month, you suddenly find yourself being confronted with exciting options to earn that amount and more.

Pick up a Courage Crowbar and smash throw the glass windows of your comfort zone. Force yourself into the presence of the people whose success you emulate. The Dollar Sign

People ask me why I wear a small, handcrafted, solid gold dollar sign on my lapel, and why I only give these lapel pins to very few people. Is it because my company is called “DollarMakers”? Is it to tell people I’m rich? No. It’s a symbol. What does it represent to me?

The dollar sign is a symbol top me of my highest values: Freedom, Responsibility, Accountability, Creativity, Contribution, and Power. In a truly capitalist society, we are rewarded in proportion to our contribution. The creators and producers are rewarded in dollars. It is a sign that they have taken responsibility, created their own power and freedom, and enriched the lives of many other people.

90% of our problems can be solved, or at least eased, with money. The mystics, collectivists, and socialists have tried to reverse this philosophy. They teach that you can’t be rich and honest, that money and business is bad, that we don’t deserve wealth, power, or happiness, that non-producers should be allowed to leech off the producers, and that man is basically a sinful animal that should give everything he has to those more lazy and greedy than he is. That the herd deserves what you have. I don’t believe that.

Real greed is found in people who want what they haven’t earned. They are the thieves, and the government is a good example of that. Most business owners are basically honest, hard-working, and responsible. Most employees do the least possible, take the maximum, and constantly complain that they don’t get enough. Bureaucrats and politicians are the worst. People who say, “Money isn’t important” are usually the most greedy people you’ll ever meet.

Proud, self-dependent capitalists make the world work. They are entitled to everything they earn. Without them, the world would fail, just like communism, and religious wars would be even bigger than they already are. The dollar sign represents fairness, a work ethic, responsibility, contribution, dignity, and self-respect. Real capitalists help those who cannot help themselves, not those who will not help themselves.

My philosophy is that of Objectivism, and the book to read is “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. Google her. Learn from her. She wore a dollar sign pin on her lapel.

The Only Barrier to Wealth

Successful people do what unsuccessful people refuse to do. Most people are addicted to their comfort zone. It’s more comfortable for losers to lie on the couch smoking than it is to get dressed, drive through the snow to a meeting, and come home late at night. It’s more comfortable to mix with wanna-be’s who are no threat to your mediocrity and laziness than it is to mix with winners who will challenge you and question you.

Losers do the easy things. They want instant gratification like macaroni cheese and fast food and the TV remote. They attend seminars but never implement anything they hear. They drink and lie and show up late, make excuses and let people down. They prefer to borrow money than to earn it. Ideally, they want the government to pay for everything. Their compass is their comfort. Their surroundings and circumstances determine their level of comfort. They’re a cancer on your wealth, because they will sabotage your success. Enough about them.

Winners will step up and step out. They will do what is difficult and uncomfortable until it becomes easy and comfortable. Their compass is their objective and their values. They do not compromise. They will find people who are more successful than they are so that they can become more successful. They will model winners and discipline themselves to take uncomfortable action and make difficult choices. They are reliable, consistent, and persistent. They do what they say they will do, WHEN they say they will do it, and they attract strong people into their lives.

You don’t have to motivate and encourage a winner. You don’t have to remind them or beg them to do the right thing or honor their commitments. For them, comfort is not the criteria. They will become successful with or without you. They are self-motivated, self-disciplined, and self-reliant. Most importantly, they do not need your endorsement or acknowledgement. Their self-esteem is intact and high. They believe in themselves.  For that reason, they are comfortable with themselves in any situation.

Think about that. Winners are comfortable in any situation, because of the way they interpret their circumstances to themselves.It’s all in your head, and when you get control of your mind, you live in a mental comfort zone. You will not feel ashamed, inferior, uncomfortable, at risk, afraid, embarrassed, or inadequate. Every situation becomes comfortable because of who you are. This is what self development does for you. With  strong a self image and loads of confidence, you ARE your comfort zone, regardless of your circumstances.

The cream always rises to the top. Winners are unstoppable. They immerse themselves in personal growth and they regard personal growth programs like they do a shower or bathing - we all shower at least once a day, right? Well, winners will get their self-improvement fix at least once a day. That could be reading a good book, listening to a CD, meeting with other winners or talking with them on the phone or Internet, watching a good DVD, attending a seminar. The most powerful self-improvement tool currently available is Success University. Saddling Up for 2008

Last night, as we finally got around to putting up our Christmas tree, we went through the usual routine of hanging our yearly decorations. Every year since we arrived in Canada December 1st, 1997, we buy a special tree decoration that features the year. For example, we have a little snowman marked 1997, a fairy marked 1998, an elf marked 1999, etc, right up through 2007. Each decoration marks another year in Canada. Ten decorations = ten wonderful years. What decoration will represent 2008 in your life? Will it be a dollar sign?

You will have a few days of peace and quiet between now and January 1st, 2008. This is a great time to make some changes, set some goals, realign your life with your values and objectives, make new commitments, and put some new Joint Ventures and relationships in place. If I could contribute positively to your life in 2008, I would be most grateful, because Zig Ziglar promises that we can get anything we want out of life if we’re prepared to help enough other people to get what they want. When you win, I win, and I want DollarMakers Club Members to join me in making 2008 an extraordinarily successful year, even better than 2007.

Don’t Doubt Yourself

I’ll never forget the time I sat with five business owners in a restaurant in Vancouver and the server studiously ignored us for twenty minutes. When she finally sidled up to the table, I asked her why we had to wait so long to get served. Everyone at the table was shocked - they were troubled by the fact that I expected faster service and all sided with the server, who walked at a snail’s pace and made no attempt to hurry. It was my first taste of  West Coast slothfulness. A friend of mine runs fourteen restaurants in South Africa and a survey showed them that the average time it takes from the point a guest is seated to the point where he gets irritated by having to wait to have a server arrive at his table with a menu to take the drinks order is exactly seventeen seconds.

When you set and maintain high standards, expect to be attacked by the mediocre herd. High quality becomes an instant threat to them and they don’t like what they see in the mirror. So they break the mirror, shoot the messenger, and return to their mediocrity. Recently I had someone become very indignant and offended by my “aggressive” behavior - after all, all he has done is bounce two checks on me, made me wait twice the time he promised to deliver the replacements, make a client of his wait two months for a receipt which he still hasn’t sent her, lie, and never apologize for anything. How can I be upset about that? Aggressive? Baby, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

Sometimes, you might be tempted to “cool down, slow down, lower your standards, chill out, relax”, and basically roll over, bend over, and join the losers. Don’t. Don’t doubt yourself. Set HIGHER standards. Flush the passive-aggressive weaklings, liars, and wanna-be’s out of your life. Don’t compromise. The tall trees catch the wind, Horace. If it’s windy, you’re probably right on track to success. Only dead fish swim with the current. Being attacked by losers is a sign that you have the courage you need to reach exciting goals.

Here are some words the herd will use to describe you if you’re a winner: too aggressive, money-mad, A Type Personality, Donald-Trump type, hard, impatient, driven, difficult… in my opinion, all compliments. Thank you, spank you, and eat my dust!

Your Future in Five Years

I have just been reading an article in BC Business about retirement. Many people who don’t know what I know will be severely depressed at the end of the article. They will be preparing to work until they die. They will be trembling with fear and worry, because they are reading the perspective of financial planners who do not know what we know. If they do know it, they’re not telling - it would be bad for their business; their commissions would plummet. If my bank manager knew that I could offer you an easy 18% on your money, she would have a fit, especially since it’s the bank’s money!

The truth is that you can retire in one year using Joint Ventures, and if that is too hard for your conditioning to accept, how about five years? EASY.  I have decided to focus strongly on that aspect in my 2008 Joint Venture Broker Bootcamps. We have powerful vehicles and systems already in place that WORK. 80/20

OK, we all know the Pareto Principle: 80% of your results from 20% of your activities / clients. It’s also true that in many cases you need the 80% duds to introduce you to the 20% studs. Here’s a good rule of thumb: If the 80% is taking your time away from the 20%, delete it / them. But if the 80% takes little time, makes you some money, and leads to the 20%, keep it. If the 20% people become 80% people, they have to go.

This month I am cleaning house big time. I received a great report on DollarMakers from a very wise mentor of mine, and I am adjusting my sails accordingly. It takes some self-discipline to look at one’s business objectively, for the good of the DollarMakers, our future growth and reputation, the Members and our JV partners, and make the hard decisions. Quality and integrity has to rule.

Paddy Lund is a dentist in Australia. He was suicidal and went to his mentor, Jay Abraham, for business advice. He fired 80% of his patients. The remaining 20% were told that they could only remain his patients if they agreed to each refer him to ten of their best friends. And they made him a multi-millionaire who is very happy and content, and has lots of time on his hands. 80/20.

I encourage you, as you sit  in front of the fire with your eggnog, setting goals with your family for 2008 and beyond, to cut the fat out of your life, set higher standards, do the hard things, and prepare to soar with the eagles. Reserve your resources for the optimal return on investment. Do not cast pearls before swine or allow yourself to be taken advantage of. Remember this:

I see too many pussy-whipped wimps who need permission from their wives to have a drink, play golf, write a check, set up a meeting, or make a decision. It’s pathetic. Be a man. Take your gonads out of your wife’s purse and take control. I see men turning into girlie men - having manicures,  putting on make-up, scared of their own shadows - if you’re a heterosexual man, behave like a man and you’ll feel like a man. Your wife is not gay. Instead of being a “Stay-at-Home-Dad”, get your weak asset out there and make some money to support your family so that your wife can do what she’s supposed to do, which is look after the kids and cook food. Get out of the spa and chop some wood or go to the shooting gallery. Throw away your dolls and play with a dump truck. Roll around in some mud to remind yourself that you’re a man. You don’t need permission to go to the ball game, any more than she needs your permission to visit her friends. Just TELL her you’re going.

If you don’t take your manhood back, your son will turn out just like you and your daughter will go find herself a lily-livered wuss to marry that she will end up working 12 hours a day to support while he stays home with the kids, baking pies and flirting with the woman next door. You didn’t marry your mother, so stop behaving like one of your children.

Second part: Be a gentleman. Pull out the chair for her, open the car door for her, tell her you love her, treat her like a queen (instead of her treating you like a queen) , buy her flowers and gifts, compliment her, carry her bags for her, and do work that men are supposed to do.  Hold her hand. Talk nicely. Don’t look at other women. Men who can’t keep their eyes off other women and go to strip shows are openly insulting their wives. They deserve to be treated badly. Tell her she’s beautiful. Take responsibility for your family, the money, and her safety. Make the hard decisions for her. Take the lead. You’re the head of the house, so behave like the head of the house.

You are equal partners, but you have different roles. Take the role of the man instead of the hired help / babysitter / house cleaner. Instead of ironing and cooking, get out there and make money so you can hire the help. Do whatever it takes. Stop making excuses and whining. Protect and support your family. That’s what real men do. Ask your dad (if he was a real man, that is.)

Part of the problem I see is that most men I know were never in the army, are scared of guns and are passive aggressive, undisciplined weaklings. Your wife will respect you when you take responsibility and become a man again. Women want courageous, self-assured, bold men with true grit and who know what they want. They want strong gentlemen. Now, if your wife wants to be a man, dresses like a man or a slut with her tramp stamps and cigarettes, flirting and cussing and issuing of orders, perhaps you should find her a wife and go find yourself a real woman. But only if you’re a real man.

Once you become a real man and take responsibility for your family, you will feel good about yourself. Virgins Don’t Understand Childbirth

Even if they spend ten years in university studying it. Even if they’re midwives. Even if they work in a store that sells baby clothes. Even if they never grew up. If you want to know about childbirth, find a woman who has had a few babies. She knows.

And if you want to know about finances and investments and money and how to make it, find someone who has a lot of money and who has made money and knows how to manage it, not someone who inherited it, stole it, or works in a bank. Which brings me to my point. I LOVE learning from experts. I get excited about all the time and money I am saving. But I don’t take advice from idiots.

I talked with a fellow to whom I had recommended my favorite business opportunity. His response was that he talked with someone who was involved in the company years back and “wasn’t happy” with the company. I have two friends who are regional Vice Presidents with the same company. They joined eight years ago (in Canada) and made $108,000 in their first ten months. Now their residual income alone is six figures a year. Whose advice would you take?

John Addison says, “Never take advice from anyone more screwed up than you are”. Great advice. Don’t ask me about physical fitness, weight loss, cars, computers, fishing, or woodwork - I have no idea how any of that stuff works. I hire experts unless I’m the expert.  (I’m good at washing dishes, though - better than the dishwasher. Since I’m obsessive compulsive, that somehow makes sense…)

Getting the right advice from the right person saves you time, money, frustration, worry, confusion, and in some cases even your reputation. It gives you peace of mind and confidence. If I gave you advice about weight loss your stomach would look like my paunch! I get desperate calls and emails from people telling me they’re desperate to make money and asking for guidance, but they don’t always follow my advice. When they do, they make money.

I always laugh at men who say, “We’re pregnant” - what an insult to his wife!  We have no idea, buddy. All we do is feed them silly food, comfort them, and hang around at the back of the room looking silly. We’re not pregnant; we couldn’t handle it.

Make Your “Somedays” Your EVERY days.

John Addison said, “A handful of people make their “Some-days” their “Every days”. Too many people keep saying “Someday I’ll” until they’re too old to do anything and life has passed them by. “Someday I’ll do this or that” simply doesn’t work. Promises, promises. Talk is cheap, and money buys the Lagavulin. You have to do what other people don’t do to have what other people won’t have. You have to step up and take action.

When you look at your life, you see a bountiful harvest or a field of weeds, and guess what? YOU PLANTED IT! That’s right - whatever your life is right now, is your fault. It’s sad to see people missing opportunities, the door of opportunity slamming shut on their fingers. My question to all those fearful people who spend their time on the dock, peering at the “lucky” people on the cruise ship balconies, is, “When are you going to get yourself onto that ship?”

The RIGHT kind of action is what I’m talking about. Attending seminars ad nauseum but never implementing the information is a waste of time. Preparing until you have no time left to implement. Learning but never applying, putting off decisions, making weak excuses that nobody believes, avoiding decisions and hiding away while others are soaring to unprecedented heights of success is a loser’s game. The key to success is to alternate between learning and implementing. Learn, then implement what you’ve learned, learn some more, and immediately implement it. Do the hard thing and you’ll get the good stuff.

Stop faltering - get off the wheel of indecision, doubt, and fear, and climb onto the ladder of success. Join the winners who never quit, never doubt, and create the life they want. Turn your some-days into every-days and live life to the fullest. Become a real DollarMaker!

“Insist on Success!”

I love watching boxing. Not because I like to live vicariously through others, like most sports fans - one good boxing match a year on TV is a good quota for me - but I love witnessing the commitment and courage of the boxers. Bleeding and groggy, but not out. Staggering up off the canvas time and time again, begging to continue the fight. Insisting on the win.

Watching the life of Cassius Clay / Mohamed Ali, hearing his powerful affirmations, and seeing him insist on victory, is about as inspiring as it gets. Beats some coiffed “Motivational Speaker” with his forced laughter and  thinly veiled sales pitch hands down, every time. My hero was in it for life - not some tentative try, a trembling, faint-hearted, half-assed approach - just solid, unstoppable, powerful commitment. Wonderful.

The weak ones are passive-aggressive, sly, mercenary, and always have the back door open, and they’re dangerous. They hug, smile, simper and pay compliments all the way out the back door, where they hit the ground running back to Mama. They’re only committed to their back pockets and they turn tail at the first sign of trouble. But enough about them.

When you insist upon success, whatever it takes, however long it might take, and whatever price you have to pay, your triumph is assured. When you decide that failure is not an option, that you will endure no matter what others may say, think or do, that you will never compromise your values, you join the 3% of the population that is free in every way. The question is not, “CAN you?” but “WILL you?”

“Mediocrity is the most selfish pursuit of any human being”, said Jim Stovall, yet compromise is the national sport. Politically correct sycophants are a cancer on the success of any nation. Winners will tenaciously forge ahead against all odds. They are persistent, consistent, and insistent upon success. There is a sense of urgency and courage about them that attracts others to join them on their quest. They are undaunted by difficulty and unaffected by adversity.

When you decide that you will insist upon success, there is no expiry date on your commitment, and no excuses are acceptable. You will rely completely upon yourself and you will not tolerate losers who wish to poison, distract, and sabotage your mission. You will become bulletproof, a warrior 24 hours a day. Every thought, choice, action, and word will become aligned with your purpose, and that congruity will will energize and support you through the dark days and lonely nights.

Filtering the Gold from the Dross

Watch a chef selecting vegetables at the market for his high class restaurant. Very picky. A builder would be very careful what materials he uses when constructing a high-rise. Ask a diamond dealer how many stones are rejected.  The higher the quality, the smaller the percentage of acceptable material. The most successful salespeople are the ones who are very selective whom they approach with their products and services. They meticulously prequalify potential buyers.

As a successful Joint Venture Broker, the same applies. Be very careful and do your due diligence, and when a loser slips through the net, get rid of him fast, before too much damage is done. The best way I have found to protect myself and my Members from the unworthy weasels out there is setting up filters. That’s a process that will stop them from sneaking in under the radar. You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince.

Here are some filters that work well for me:

1. I only work with Members of the DollarMakers Joint Venture Club, so that I can fire dishonest types when their masks slip, thuis protecting my Members. Also, anyone who can’t afford $247 per year or needs to barter it, should get a job at a fast food joint.

2. I never deal with people who are in desperate financial trouble. Desperate people will do desperate things and use situation ethics to justify bad behavior, blame others, and renege on their commitments. They will pressure people to buy from them, lie and exaggerate, make excuses, and play games.

3. People who are not punctual or prompt in their response to e mails and phone calls are filtered out.

4. “Faithful in little, faithful in much” - if people dishonor small commitments, renege of small promises, lie, or steal small amounts, they will do it on a larger scale, given the opportunity. Test them in small things. If they fail, cut bait. Yesterday.

5.  Religious nuts who tell you about their faith and integrity in the first five minutes should be sent packing. If you have to tell me that you’re honest, I don’t believe you. And being religious is private information. There are a few religious suicide bombers out there, too.

6.  Your friends and associates: I will judge you by the company you keep. If you’re a friend of my enemy, you become my enemy. Like attracts like.

Winners will communicate easily and often, they will be open, confident and generous, and they will have solid track records, high standards, exciting and specific goals, and winners for friends. They represent a small percentage of the population. They’re diamonds. Don’t mistake coal for diamonds.

Your Anchors

Life is about interpretation - the way you interpret your circumstances and options determines your level of success, peace of mind, and happiness. And our perceptions, interpretations and associations can be positively affected through the use of “anchors”. I’m not talking about ship or boat anchors, although that is indeed a positive association,  hence the name, but emotional anchors.

I have participated in and led six Fire Walks. We used anchoring to put ourselves into state before traipsing across burning, red-hot coals. Works well, to which my lovely feet will attest. I taught my Daughter, Sacha, to use anchoring when she won rollerskating competitions and did skydiving. An anchor is used to put yourself into a peak emotional state by choice at any time you wish.

Before the Firewalk, we remembered a time in our lives when we were in a very positive emotional state. We spent some time remembering the feelings, sights, sounds, smells, and surroundings of that happy time, reliving it and then building up to a climactic emotional state through hyperventilation, at which time we “anchored” that feeling with a shout, a word, and/or a physical movement, like pumping your fist and shouting, “YES!” If this is done well (the fear of roasting the old feet is a major motivation) and repeated enough times, it becomes a powerful tool to use in many situations in one’s life. Before stepping onto the coals, we anchored, then walked calmly and confidently across them. Yes, Mable, it is a form of self-hypnosis.

Another form of anchoring is to include positive, encouraging reminders and associations in your life. When I first visited Andy in Worthing, England, he educated me about flint. It’s all over the beaches and many buildings in Surrey, including Arundel Castle, which I visited with Justine, use flint. It’s a wonderful stone and every time I go to Worthing I bring some flint back home. Every time I feel or see a piece of flint, I remember its qualities, the castle (The Buddha said, “Know that your body is a fragile jar, and make your mind a castle”) and my positive emotions about the flint on the beaches, the crashing waves, and sitting with my darling wife looking out of the window of our 200-year-old hotel at the waves at 2am. That is a positive anchor.

In my car, I have CD’s by my mentors. My study is filled with positive anchors, symbols, pictures, memorabilia, gifts, ornaments, and statues. I am surrounded by anchors. Our home is one, big anchor. We design our lives and we build in all the support and help we can. We remove negative associations and people from our lives. (We toss out the garbage, too.)

As you prepare for a great 2008, I encourage you to create and find anchors to inspire and motivate you. Success is by choice, not by chance. Build you castle with flint, not Styrofoam or dung. Peter Drukker said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”

How to Have a Great 2008

Imagine a man who decides to go out and catch a fish. He prepares his fishing pole, bait, hooks, and all the other tools he needs. He does his research and decides where he will fish, and at what time, and then he dresses accordingly and off he goes to achieve his goal.  He doesn’t sit at home watching TV and chanting, “Fish, fish, fish” during the commercials, hoping a nice trout will miraculously appear in his frying pan.

When you decide to become rich in 2008, it will be by design, not by chance. And the amount of wealth you attain will be in direct proportion to the extent to which you plan, the  passion and determination with which you rigorously act upon that plan, and the quality of your mentors and the people with whom you work. The woman who expects to find a wonderful, successful man by tarting herself up and falling around in a bar is deceiving herself. Fishing in the wrong waters with a broken net is not smart.

Smart people who are committed to unprecedented success in 2008 will find the right mentors and carefully select the vehicles which will carry them to their objectives. They will do their due diligence, seek advice from the right people, and be fully prepared, locked and loaded, when January first smiles a new dawn. They will be like a well disciplined and highly trained army, confident and ready to do whatever it takes to claim the victory. And they will be prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to win.

The clever ones have been preparing for 2008 for weeks, months, even years. They will hit the ground running, fit, hungry, trim, and eager, while others will still be wiping the sleep from their bloodshot eyes and trying to decide how to pay their credit cards and recover from their hangovers. The winners will have Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C memorized. Their support systems will be in place. Joint Venture Brokers will have their JV’s in place, oiled, loaded, prepared and primed. They will face the inevitable obstacles, detours, challenges and changes will a smile, quickly overcoming problems and adjusting their sails as the wind changes.

Set your goals, create your action plans, gather your support structure, select your team, and get ready. Get excited. My affirmation for 2008 is so exciting I have to avoid using it at night to stave off insomnia. It kicks in more energy than fourteen espressos, because my belief and faith are in direct proportion to my goals, plans, team, and expectations. I am very well prepared. I have taken a good, hard look in the mirror, cut fat (still more to go) and adjusted where necessary.
